Alexander the Great conquered Anatolia by 334 BC causing two great civilizations, the Greeks and the Anatolians, to meet and mix for the first time. Especially in western Anatolia, this combination produced new art and culture and paved the way for a new era which is called the Hellenistic Era. Ephesus, Miletos, Priene and Didyma are well-known major cities of this era.

The rise of Rome ended the Hellenistic Era and the Romans took control of Asia Minor. Not long after this, Ephesians celebrated the arrival of St. John (his tomb can be visited today in Selcuk ) whom Jesus Christ entrusted with his Mother. St. John transformed Ephesus into the religious centre of Western Anatolia.

The small house which is found in the hills of Ephesus is believed to be where the Virgin Mary spent her final days. It has been dedicated by the Roman Catholic Church as a holy destination. Artemis Temple, being one of the Seven Wonders of the World is also in this area and is only a few kilometers from Ephesus.
